It is important to know the three verb forms V1 V2 V3 to avoid grammatical errors in sentences. From the basic infinitive form with V1, to the past tense with V2, and the V3 past participle form, all tenses rely on these variations of verb forms to construct sentences.

Not all verbs are the same- regular verbs are predictable and the structure flows like a mathematical formula. No errors if you have the formula in place. However, there are very many irregular verbs in the English language which do not follow the norms. So, your only recourse is to spend time getting perfect with the first three verbs forms, V1, V2 and V3.

What Are V1 V2 V3 V4 V5

Let us understand what V1 V2 V3 V4 and V5 really are with READ as the example verb:

  • The V1 is the verbs infinitive form, as in “to read“. It is also called the base form of the verb; meaning it is the form that transforms as needed by a tense or structure.
  • The V2 is the simple past form, as in “I read the book already.” While regular verbs tend to end with ‘-ed’, irregular verbs have no set pattern in V2.
  • The V3 is the past participle form, as in “I had read the book in 3rd grade.” Most regular verbs have the same form as V2 for V3.
  • The V4 is the third person singular from in the simple present tense, as in “He sings all day.” Since some ending consonants and spelling patterns necessitate “es” ending, the V4 forms could end with ‘s’ added to the base form, or ‘es’ added on. As in, “reads” but “wishes.” for base forms ‘read‘ and ‘wish‘.
  • The V5 is the “-ing” form or the gerund form, as in “She is reading the book right now.
